Sophisticated Living Room

This dramatic, sophisticated Living Room in a century old home was designed around the client's extensive art collection.

From the Client, Claire Brown

I fell in love with our Grosse Pointe Park house when I first saw it. Lots of windows & light, interesting layout, good flow, fireplaces, bathrooms, a great yard. The potential was there. We bought it, moved in, and then decorator after decorator advised me on how to ‘sparkle it up.’ I ignored all their suggestions, trying to get my bearings.

I got my bearings by bringing home art from galleries and from countries whose ethos or flavor I wanted to be reminded of. No problem identifying art I liked and wanted to live with. Furniture, carpet, wallpaper were a different story. Fortunately at about the time when returns on art shopping were diminishing, I found Gail Urso, friend and decorator, who with our input could weave our possessions into a rich, exciting environment expressive of us.

Now I love our house and it expresses us. Who knew you needed a decorator to express your own self? Gail knew, and now we love not just the flow and the light but the color of walls, style of furniture, texture of fabric, and the jazziness of our kitchen and sunroom which Gail designed.

When we became owners of a Scottsdale, AZ condo, we started with art and a budget, and again Gail’s energy and vision created for us a unique Southwestern environment.
